Tomás Rivas was born in Santiago de Chile
in 1975. He received a Post-baccalaureate and a Bachelor's degree
in Fine Art from the Universidad Católica de Chile. He
later attended the University of Notre Dame where he completed
his MFA in sculpture. Rivas currently lives and works in Washington,
D.C., dividing his time between an Academic Year Internship in
Exhibition Design at the National Gallery of Art and his professional
career as an artist. Rivas's artwork deals with the historic
tension between two-dimensional and three-dimensional representation.
His ongoing investigation of the representation of space addresses
the complexity of art production today, where the "center" and
the "periphery" vie for political clout within the
mainstream.
In 2005 Rivas's MFA thesis exhibit received two
prestigious awards: The Outstanding Student Achievement Award
of the International Sculpture Center publishers of Sculpture
Magazine, and the Snite Museum of Art's Walter R. Beardsley Award
for Best in Show. In addition to these awards, in 2004, Tomás
Rivas received the 1984 Foundation Fellowship for his participation
in "Project for the Study and Publication of the Greek Architecture
at Corinth," directed by Prof. Robin F. Rhodes. In 1997-98,
motivated by his Italian heritage, Rivas applied for and received
a Università degli Studi di Genova Scholarship to pursue
Italian Studies. While in Italy, he also lived and worked in
Milan as a printmaking apprentice. Today, Rivas’ artwork
incorporates both printmaking and sculpture into a larger conceptual
practice of drawing.
